Day Twenty-Nine: Seek God First
"But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." - Matthew 6:33
We live in a world where so many things clamour for our attention and combat our ability to experience the more we've been made for. In our generation, it is easy for things to get muddled through distraction and the weight of responsibility. Social media, smartphones, daily duties at work, and obligations at home may feel like we exist and are far away from MORE. Jesus teaches us how to organize our priorities to obtain MORE.
Matthew 6:25-33 is Jesus' response to managing and organizing our life's pursuits, responsibilities and priorities. Jesus tells His disciples to seek God's kingdom first, and all these things will be added to them. God's response to the obligations of life and our priorities is to seek Him first. Seeking God first may seem simple and overstated; however, it is the most important and powerful thing we can do. When we seek God first, we protect ourselves from investing our time, energy and resources into the wrong things.
Seeking God first communicates trust and dependence. Today's scripture reminds us that God understands that we have needs. When we seek Him first, we take the obligation of meeting our needs out of our hands and into His hands. When we seek God first, we begin to enjoy the blessing and benefit of the addition principle.
God promises that "all these things will be added to you." Notice that God does not say these things will be "strived" for. When we take the posture of putting God first and seeking Him wholeheartedly, our well-being becomes a direct responsibility of our King. And He NEVER FAILS!
Have you gotten your priorities upside down? It happens, but at the beginning of 2023, let's start the year right side up and seek God FIRST! Lastly, if we define the word "first," it means "first of all" or "before anything else is done." Jesus is saying that when we set our pursuit of God before anything else, we align with how Jesus desires us to live our lives…Made for MORE!
PRAYER: Jesus, I trust You and Your Word and seek You first above all other things. Lord, help me to always keep my priorities in alignment with Your Word by seeking You first and trusting that You will add all that I need. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
